Course Objectives: At the conclusion of the program, attendees will:
  1. Know the probability of obtaining sustained virological responses for patients treated with pegylated interferon and ribavirin for chronic hepatitis C virus infections associated with different genotypes, viral loads, body weights, co-infections and races. Understand the new antiviral agents being developed for treatment of chronic hepatitis C and the design of the clinical trials of these agents. Be able to identify patients with either HBeAg-positive or HBeAg-negative hepatitis B virus infections who should be treated and the pros and cons of each of the FDA-approved antiviral therapies. Identify patients with either HCV or HBV infection who should have serial surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma.
  2. Describe the role of visceral hypersensitivity in the etiology and pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Contrast current drug therapies used in the management of IBS. Identify the role of non-pharmacological therapies in the management of IBS.
  3. Describe the new global definition and classification of GERD. Examine new data on the relationship between GERD and extra-esophageal disorders. Discuss the risks and long term benefits of therapy for GERD.

Target Audience: This symposium for primary care physicians and other interested physicians, will address three topics: Update on Hepatitis B and C, Update on IBS and Update on GERD.
